Hexagon
HxGN SMART Build
Hexagon's key stakeholders had the vision to enter the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) market with an enterprise solution offering that would enable the ability to perform construction planning and subcontractor management at the early stages of a project, and provide the functional capability to monitor, edit, and update plans and results based on real-time feedback from construction activities.
The resulting new HxGN SMART Build solution enables up-to-the-minute tracking, managing and reporting of time, materials, model visualization and interactive spreadsheets, and improves all facets of project performance to the benefit of construction executives and shareholders.

Challenges
|
• This advanced capability simply doesn’t exist today in an enterprise context
• Reduce the huge budget and time overruns – 30% waste in AEC |
|
Strategic Solutions
|
• Establish good construction planning with 2D & 3D scheduling
• Push construction plan to the field (Building Information Modeling (BIM) • Capture and communicate back plan deviations that occur on construction • Visualizaton of progress in the graphical model (5D) • Incorporate user focus group result and the highest quality user experience |
Research & Discovery
Our kickoff meeting and collaborative workshop involved stakeholders from multiple levels of architects, construction workers, and the technology team. We discussed business goals, expected outcomes, and we laid out with lego figures current user flows across multiple locations and different roles.
The diagram below represents a high level information flow during the construction phase of a building, derived from a combination of user interviews.
Ideation Workshops

Wireframes
Workshop findings were incorporated into medium-fidelity wireframes that served as a high-level outline for a functional prototype/MVP Preliminary, which were used to discuss and validate the structure, navigation, content, functionality, hierarchy, and layout with team members and clients.
Solution
The new software enables intuitive interactive 3D model viewing in a connected cloud environment. The solution also extends beyond model viewing with the ability to plan and execute construction projects by combining models, cost, and schedule in one integrated platform. Users can track actual time and cost in the field in real-time and continuously compare to original planning in office.
